What The "....."?!

Dear FB Friends, Followers, and Stalkers,

I really didn't think this would create such a problem for some of you guys.

Some of you were amused, some were annoyed, some were confused, but a great many of you wondered (quite frequently in my email inbox, I might add): "What's up with the "......" posts?"

The most common belief was that it was a silent way of posting about the MIAMI HEAT, which it wasn't. (Seriously, why would I relegate describing the greatness of the most exciting team assembled in recent basketball history to a bunch of dots. C'mon! Though I will still refrain from posting until after the season because I found it exhausting.)

In actuality, it had everything to do with working on the "Monica" film and focusing the creative energies on that until it's finished to make its December 2011 release date. The trailer for the film is almost finished, so it's crunch time for that part of the project. Animation is very labor-intensive, and posting "........." was a simple way to stay tethered to the Social Network without having to go into deep conversation.

So you may be wondering 'why not just stay off of Facebook altogether if you need to focus, Mr. Dot Post?!' Well, first, where's the fun in that? Second, FB is how I stay in contact with many collaborators, so I can't shut it off completely. Still, the interesting thing about this unintended Social Network experiment was that when I typed "........" I really meant ".........". It was very entertaining to see how some of you interpreted and perceived the different posts and for that, I thank you.

I will be back to posting nonsense soon enough after I'm done knocking out this trailer. Until then, I'll try and make my "......" posts more palatable for you. Thanks to all of you who've sent kind messages. I really appreciate them. But if you're one of the very few that were that annoyed by ".......", just "hide" them. Mark Zuckerberg did tell one of his peons to code that into FB specifically for that use, y'know. I won't even be mad at you. Though if you do hide me, you may be mad at yourself for missing out on all the future fun.

Q: What did the five championship rings say to Shaq's face?

A: "SMAQ!"

A little backstory on this one:

I admit, I took Shaq's side in the Shaq/Kobe Laker divorce (primarily because he went to play for my MIAMI HEAT and helped deliver our first NBA title.) However, shortly after that championship, HEAT fans discovered what Laker fans already knew: Shaq was lazy and blamed everyone else but himself for any problems the team had. When Shaq left us, he dissed our franchise and the man who practically carried HIM to a 4th ring, Dwyane Wade.

Since then, I've been rooting for Kobe to get more rings than Shaq not because I'm a Kobe guy (his arrogance sickens me sometimes, though I appreciate his dedication to the game), but because I think Shaq is the most lazy, underachieving NBA great to ever play the game.

If The Big Underachiever were serious about winning, he would've put ego aside and owned the late 90's with Penny, and the entire 2000's with Kobe. Bottom line, Shaq should have 14 rings. Instead he just has 4...which is now one less than Kobe.

Anyway, those are my two cents.

Drawing With the iPad: An Artistic Review

Since the iPad's debut in April 2010, I've been searching all over the Internet for reviews on drawing apps for the device, only to be disappointed by a majority of the reviews. A lot of them don't really reveal in-depth things artists would really like to know about the apps, and none of the reviews seemed to have a side-by-side comparison as to which app does what best. Hence, the purpose of this post.

Having bought an iPad as a lightweight digital sketchbook for work (at least that's how I justified the purchase), I've put the device and assorted apps I think would be most helpful to artists through the paces. Here are the results:

Sketchbook Pro ($7.99), Autodesk

PROS:
-pretty much the best drawing app of the bunch as drawing feels just right, like drawing in a "sketchbook" only without the grey graphite smudges on your drawing hand
-nice selection of brushes and very deep brush customization features
-has layer modes with options (such as Multiply, Add, and Screen)
-capable of exporting fully layered images to Photoshop via PSD files (a plus if you have a complex drawing)

CONS:
-using the three-finger-tap to access panels and undo/redo takes some getting used to
-doesn't quite have ALL the features of its PC/Mac big brother
-smudge/smear tool could be much, MUCH better
-for the time being, no customization for image resolutions
-limited undos

Overall experience: For $7.99, Sketchbook Pro is a STEAL, especially considering that the full desktop version costs well over $100. Definitely a 'must have'.

Art Studio ($2.99), Lucky Clan
PROS:
-GREAT value for $2.99
-incredibly easy drawing interface, very intuitive
-drawing feels fantastic
-decent smudge/smear tool is better than Sketchbook Pro's
-good brush customization options
-image resolution options off the bat (from 768 x 768 all the way up to 1024 x 1024)
-contains very cool video tutorials that actually teach new artists how to draw heads, hands, and other things
-full-screen filters that instantly turn your drawing into black and white, invert colors, blur/ sharpen, edge detect, and emboss

CONS:
-maybe it's just me, but in pushing the app, performance began to lag and brush strokes weren't registering properly
-brush selection is not as deep as Sketchbook Pro's
-layer modes do not have Multiply, Add, Screen, etc. type of selections

Overall experience: Cent for cent, this app is the most valuable of the bunch. It does a lot of the same things Sketchbook Pro does. However, every time I used it for any length of time, and intricate drawing, the app's performance faltered a bit. Still, that should not deter you from making this part of your iPad drawing repertoire. I say it's a must have, if nothing else, for the image resolution option.

Brushes ($7.99), Steve Sprang
PROS:
-simple user interface
-drawing feels nice and loose
-contains video playback of the drawing process
-layer modes have Multiply, Screen, Overlay, and Color (transparency) options
-neat rotate layer tool
-direct upload to Flickr (if that's important to you)
-lots of undos available

CONS:
-no decent smudge/smear tool
-brush selection is quite small and has the standard brushes found on just about every other mobile drawing device, (like vsPainter)
-brush customization options are limited
-unless I'm doing something wrong, it flattens a multi-layered image when exporting it to photos, or e-mail

Overall experience: Brushes is a nice app. Though for $7.99, I expected more. However, this app is very capable of producing some very nice art primarily with the great layer options available (though it's a shame the layers won't export. One can't have everything for $7.99, I guess.)

LiveSketch HD ($0.99), Yan Rabovik
PROS:
-nice drawing feel
-sketches do look nice (if you don't mind "enhanced marks")
-great program for people who have trouble sketching

CONS:
-the strokes have these "enhancement marks" that artists capable of making their own will find annoying
-drawing lines tend to get "cornered" in making round strokes
-no brush selection or customization, layer modes, and none of what the other drawing apps offer

Overall experience: This app would be a nice one for kids learning to draw, or drawing enthusiasts who want a little help with the way their drawing looks. However, if you're a hardcore artist, you may want to skip this one.

Paintbook ($2.99)- (the only vector-based app of the bunch reviewed here), Sean M. Puckett

PROS:
-vector-based drawing interface makes for easy fill-ins of shapes
-great app to easily make logo images and iconic graphic-based artwork (though no Bezier curves, if you prefer Adobe Illustrator as your drawing program of choice, this one's for you as it allows you to create Illustrator-type designs)
-image size customization can be set in inches (up to 200x200 in.- or so they claim)
-deep options in the settings screens allow you to set print options from RGB/CMYK color, among other useful things
-graph paper option serves as a drawing guide to draw straight lines

CONS:
-unless I missed it, no options to draw simple shapes, which I find odd for a vector-based app
-only way to erase is via undo
-no "redo" button
-no layer support (seriously)
-exporting images done via a snapshot from 1 to 9 megapixels (which actually makes your nice and clean vector-based artwork look pixelated)

Overall experience: Paintbook actually has a lot of potential. Perhaps future updates will improve on this app's shortcomings, but for now, this is more of a vector-based idea maker than semi-decent publishing program.

Layers-Pro Edition ($5.99), Gotow.net
PROS:
-nice feel to drawing, very loose
-great smudge/smear tool (perhaps the best one)
-decent brush selection and options (brush offset feature is especially nice, as it allows you to get more interesting strokes)
-history bar like in Photoshop
-image resolution customization
-e-mailing/exporting option of PSD layer files available

CONS:
-occasional weird "cornering" of drawing strokes hiccups
-user interface could be a tad bit easier to navigate
-stability issues arise when really pushing the program, especially during PSD export

Overall experience: Layers is really quite nice. Once you get past the user interface, you'll find yourself enjoying the app quite a bit.

Adobe Ideas (FREE), Adobe
PROS:
-simple user interface
-no frills drawing features

CONS:
-feels like drawing on Adobe Flash (and if you know what that's like, you know what I mean-vectorizing lines without regard as to how you originally drew them)
-absolutely no other noteworthy features

Overall experience: I can't say Adobe Ideas is a letdown because it was, after all, FREE. However, I can see the potential in this app if Adobe supports it and gives it more features from it's PC/Mac big brothers' software suite, which would be sweet. (That is, of course, if Apple and Adobe ever kiss and make up.)

Overall, drawing on the iPad is a great experience. All the apps above are good in their own way, and it's best to view them as sketching tools rather than full production tools like you probably use on your desktop or laptop. And just like those programs, one can easily jump back and forth on these apps adding things to an image using specific tools from a certain app. I imagine that in years to come, more and more artists will embrace the iPad (or another lightweight portable tablet) as their digital drawing tool of choice because doing so will completely eliminate the need for scanning and cleaning up traditional sketches that initiate a final digital drawing. (Though I doubt anything will ever completely replace traditional drawing.)

Yet I have to say, as neat as the iPad is for digital drawing, it by no means is a suitable replacement for the Cintiq, or Modbook tablets, as it is supremely underpowered compared to both of those devices. The Cintiq and Modbook have TOTAL precision control and pressure sensitivity, which the iPad lacks. Plus, you can run the full versions of PC programs on them and take advantage of all their capabilities. I can't see myself doing my main design and animation work on the iPad in its current configuration simply because those other two tablets are far more superior (with the Modbook being the undisputed king of the mountain.) But the iPad is terrific for idea sketching on the go!

Financially speaking, being that the cheapest Cintiq runs $1,000 and the Modbook $3,000 ($5,000 + if you get the new Modbook Pro with touchscreen capability), the cheapest iPad (16 GB Wi-Fi at $499) not a bad buy at all, and makes for a great alternative tablet. Also, consider that if you did get an iPad, the apps reviewed above would only cost you about $28 for ALL OF THEM compared to the hundreds of dollars the PC/Mac versions cost.

I hope this helps any fellow digital artists out there in curious about this device and its apps.

And if you do decide to get an iPad, pray that it doesn't arrive from Fed Ex all crumpled up looking like a meaningless sheet of paper like mine did. But that's another story for another day.

iPad vs. Modbook Challenge

I realize I'd have to stand up on the roof of the Empire State Building on top of a stool wearing 24-inch stiletto heels to even come close to kissing the feet of Master Artist Jim Lee, but I decided to take on a friendly iPad vs. Modbook drawing challenge using Sketchbook Pro. The rules: Draw Wonder Woman utilizing any tools in the SBP toolset in 80 minutes.

My Love For Marvel Entertainment (1976-2009)

Sometime around noon on August 31, 2009, the Marvel Universe as we know it died of a massive corporate takeover by the malignant entity known as Disney.

I don't know what you were doing when news broke of Disney buying Marvel Entertainment, but I had just finished eating some tasty leftover spaghetti that quickly became unsettled in my belly after reading the headline. Some of you probably just shrugged and went on with your somewhat satisfied lives. But if you're like me, and have "Made Yours Marvel" for decades, this comes as a kick in the groin with a 12-inch Rambo knife attached to the steel-toed Mickey shoe.

Marvel Entertainment, home to a bunch of beloved characters that finally were turning things around movie-wise, has been bought by the Mouse that hasn't turned out a universally-adored animated film from it's own studio since The Lion King. That just seems wrong on so many levels. However one looks at it, this deal will change the game for the House that Stan Lee built, and will mean different things to different people.

What the deal feels and looks like to me.

Disney buys yet another beloved property to add it to it's soulless collection. I've always felt it was a travesty that Michael Eisner, in his quest to make Disney into an even bigger corporate juggernaut, let Disney Animation atrophy to a point where it could no longer create hits from within. Sure, Eisner's way made the Mouse a whole lot of money, but it also turned Disney, in my eyes, into the douchebag rich kid who can buy anything he wants regardless of whether he deserves it, or not.

Disney, The Douchebag Rich Kid: "My movies suck now. I wanna make people love my movies again. I've got a few billion in my pocket...guess I'll buy PIXAR! Yay!!! People love MY movies again because I own PIXAR!"

"Ooh, you guys like Spidey? Well so do I. What the heck, I got a few billion in my toilet paper roll, I'll buy him and all his superhero friends. Heck, I could even get Zac Efron to play Peter Parker if that Tobey Maguire guy won't show up at my birthday party wearing the Spidey suit. I'll show that wuss who's boss just like I'll show my mother and her middle-aged botox barracudas when I buy OPRAH!"

That's how I view Disney, and that's why this deal makes me feel slimy all over.

What the deal probably means to Disney and Marvel.

Realistically, this deal should raise the profile of the Marvel Universe higher than it's ever been. Disney has been looking to target young boys for a while now (ooh, even THAT sounds creepy) to balance out it's girlie brands of Hannah Montana, High School Musical, and everything else they produce. Marvel would make a great fit in that strategy. Plus, if they leave Marvel alone to "do their thing" like they're doing with PIXAR, some interesting shows and movies could be made as a result. (Please note, I said "interesting", NOT great, or fantastic! A horrible car accident could look "interesting" as you drive past it, too, y'know.)

What the deal means to me and others of my ilk.

One of the things that I fear will happen is that the characters we Marvel fans have grown up with will be "Disneyfied" and made into these soulless corporate products. Granted, Spider-Man and his amazing friends are already corporate products, but the difference was that Marvel was sort of playing with it's own toys, and therefore took more risks with what they did with their characters. Disney's bread and butter is family entertainment, and they're going to do whatever it takes to dangle Mom and Dad from their loafers and violently shake every last penny out of them. Sure, they'll have the "edgy" types of shows and movies featuring Wolverine and the Punisher, but have you EVER truly seen an "edgy" Disney film that was aimed at anyone below 18?

We just may see a smiling Wolverine and Punisher greeting people at the Magic Kingdom alongside Goofy, and that's just wrong!

Also, like any corporate merger, this type of deal will have casualties, though they'll be in the form of Marvel characters we'll probably NEVER see again. Remember when Disney bought the Muppets years ago? WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?!?!?!?!? I know there's a Fraggle Rock movie in the works, but I haven't seen Gonzo, Fozzie, Miss Piggy, or even Kermit that much (if at all) since THAT deal. It's almost as it Mickey has them locked away in some dungeon, probably being waterboarded as we speak by that hot-head Donald Duck.

Could this deal make Marvel movies, comics, video games, and underwear better? Anything is possible, I guess, but who the heck knows?! All I know is that Wolverine was an absolute badass, and then some douchebag rich kid bought him and put some mouse ears on him.

And you can't be a badass wearing mouse ears.
